Ingredient lists are easier to use when you know the role an ingredient commonly plays. This glossary focuses on ingredients that repeatedly appear across the BabySkincare.net catalog. It is not a list of “good” and “bad” ingredients, and an ingredient’s presence does not prove that a finished product will suit every child.

Zinc Oxide

Zinc oxide can appear as an active skin protectant in diaper products and as an active UV filter in mineral sunscreens. The concentration, regulatory panel, and purpose are different in those contexts. A zinc oxide diaper paste should never be treated as sunscreen simply because the ingredient name matches.

The existing zinc oxide cream explains diaper-barrier strengths in more detail.

Petrolatum

Petrolatum is an occlusive ingredient that helps reduce moisture loss and create a protective layer. It is common in ointments, including diaper and dry-skin products. Its greasy feel is a texture property, not evidence that the product is unsuitable. A practical comparison example is ceramide cream; the current product page can be checked against the label in hand.

Dimethicone

Dimethicone is a silicone-based ingredient used for skin protection, slip, and barrier feel in many personal-care products. When it appears as an active skin protectant, check the Drug Facts panel for concentration and labeled use.

Glycerin

Glycerin is a humectant widely used in lotions, creams, and cleansers. It helps attract water within a formula and can support a hydrated skin feel. Its effectiveness and sensory feel depend on the ingredients around it.

Ceramides

Ceramides are lipid molecules naturally found in the outer skin barrier. Moisturizers may add ceramides alongside humectants, emollients, and occlusive ingredients. The word “ceramide” does not tell you whether the finished product is a light lotion or rich cream. The same question can be tested against zinc oxide powder, a related listing already available in the catalog.

Colloidal Oatmeal

Colloidal oatmeal is a finely milled oat preparation used in topical skin-protectant and soothing products. In some over-the-counter products it can appear as an active ingredient. Distinguish colloidal oatmeal from general oat extract or oat kernel ingredients, which may be used differently.

Shea Butter

Shea butter is a plant-derived emollient rich in lipids. It appears in lotions, creams, balms, and some cleansing products to contribute richness and softness. A formula containing shea can still include fragrance or other ingredients relevant to sensitive users.

Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is a plant oil with a characteristic fatty-acid profile. It appears as a main oil in some products and as one part of a blend in others. See the existing coconut oil for routine-specific considerations. For another real-world comparison, see baby oil and verify the current package information.

Jojoba Oil

Jojoba is chemically closer to a liquid wax ester than a typical triglyceride oil. It is used for emollience and slip in body, face, hair, and massage formulas. The Jojoba Oil for Baby Skin guide covers that ingredient separately.

Aloe

Aloe-derived ingredients appear in powders, lotions, and other skincare formulas. “With aloe” is usually a supporting ingredient claim rather than a complete description of what the product does. Check the rest of the ingredient list and any fragrance or botanical additions.

How to use this glossary

Find the highlighted ingredient, identify whether it is active or inactive, then read the complete formula and product purpose. Ingredient role is context, not a diagnosis or a product recommendation.
